The KCEA was founded in October of 1977 by state community educators for the purpose of enhancing and expanding the development and servicing the community education needs of the citizens of the Commonwealth of Kentucky.
Since its formation, the KCEA has provided networking and training opportunities to Kentuckians interested or engaged in the implementation of community education concepts. KCEA members played a key role in obtaining state funds for local district community education in 1985. The continue to seek funds that can be used to implement community education in all Kentucky counties.
KCEA is the primary sponsor for the Professional Credential
Program, initiated in 1995. The purpose of the program is to provide high-quality instruction leading to a professional community education credential for successful candidates.

Community Education is a cooperative approach to education that has concern for all aspects of living in a community. The community education concept recognizes learning as a lifelong process and thus seeks to promote educational opportunities for people of all ages.
The KCEA believes that the community education concept offers a creative approach to individual and community development. We believe effective community education programs result from close cooperation among all segments of the community and we affirm the belief that citizens have the right and obligation to be involved in the decision making processes that affect their well-being. Community education at its best is:
PEOPLE HELPING PEOPLE WORKING TOGETHER TO TAKE DELIBERATE, POSITIVE ACTION TOWARD MAKING SOCIETY A BETTER PLACE IN WHICH TO LIVE.
