KCEA 2003 AWARDS


On Friday, October 24, 2003 the Kentucky Community Education Association will recognize the following individuals, programs, and projects for their outstanding achievements during the 26th Annual Awards Brunch at the Holiday Inn Hurstbourne in Louisville.  Please see the conference registration form to make your guest reservations for the Awards Brunch

  • DISTINGUISHED SERVICE

Presented to an individual who has exemplified, promoted and supported the community education concept and philosophy in the nation.
Minimum requirement: at least five years of outstanding leadership in community education.

Karen Schmalzbauer


  • PROFESSIONAL SERVICE—Community or State Level

Presented to a community education professional who has exemplified outstanding community- or state-level leadership in the development of community education.
Minimum requirement: three years of service in the person’s current position and demonstrated leadership in community education.

Jo Ellen Mitchell – Pendleton County Community Education
Nominated by Donna Dahmann, Boone County Community Education


  • CITIZEN LEADERSHIP—Community Level

Presented to a citizen volunteer who has provided leadership and rendered exemplary support and service in the development of community education in the community. 
Minimum requirement: one year of demonstrated involvement.

Mr. Bill Coleman – For his outstanding contributions and dedicated community service, both locally and on state level.

  • OUTSTANDING ORGANIZATION—Local or State Level

Presented to an agency, organization, or institution that has exemplified support and service in the development of community education.  The organization may be nominated for ongoing support or for a one-time innovative program or project.
Minimum requirement: one year of demonstrated involvement.

Danville/Boyle County Chamber of Commerce
Nominated by Kathy Belcher, Danville/Boyle County Community Education


  • MULTICULTURAL LEADERSHIP AND INVOLVEMENT—Local, State, or National Level

Presented to an agency, organization, institution, or individual who has demonstrated a commitment to promoting, developing, and nurturing leadership opportunities in community education for persons of diverse ethnic and/or cultural backgrounds.
Minimum requirement: one year of demonstrated involvement.

Nominated by Kathy Belcher, Danville/Boyle County Community Education


  • STATE ASSOCIATION LEADERSHIP

Presented to an individual member of a state community education association who has had a significant impact on community education at both the state and national levels.

Stephanie Christenson – Kentucky Department of Education


  • YOUTH LEADERSHIP—Community Level

Presented to a high school junior or senior or college undergraduate who has provided outstanding service and leadership to his or her local community through service/service learning activities through schools, agencies, community groups, or religious organizations.
Minimum requirement: a sustained commitment of at least 100 hours per year.

  • OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTION TO STATE LEGISLATION—State Level

Presented to an individual who has demonstrated leadership, persistence, and exemplary advocacy in the promotion and pursuit of Community Education legislation at the state government level.
Minimum requirement: one year of significant involvement.

  • OUTSTANDING AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAM—Local Level

Presented to an after-school program (either school-based or community-based) that demonstrates outstanding service to the children and the community by offering a safe, nurturing, and stimulation environment for those being served.  The outstanding program should:  offer a wide variety of activities; offer activities that expand on and enrich the school day curriculum; tailor offerings to the age and needs of the children; use a fun, hands-on approach to learning; and feature a caring and consistent relationship between the children and program personnel.  It also should demonstrate effective partnerships and collaborates with others.
Minimum requirement: one year of demonstrated involvement.

Presented to eight projects, one from each region, which exemplify creativity in implementation of the community education process based on a demonstrated community need.
Minimum requirement: One year of demonstrated experience.

RULES FOR EIGHT STAR AWARD

1.      Each Kentucky Community Education director’s submission of ‘What Works’ will automatically be submitted for the Eight Star Awards. 

2.      No other nomination form or submission is required. 

3.      One entry from each region will be selected for the award 

4.      Only current KCEA members are eligible to win. 

5.      Final decisions will be made by the KCEA Awards Committee. 

6.      The winners will be honored at the Annual KCEA 2003 Fall Conference at the Awards Brunch on Friday, October 24, 2003.
